Crisscross Open Back Tank DIY
One of my favorite trends this summer has definitely been the open back tanks, blouses, and dresses. I just can't get enough of them, especially when paired with a pretty bandeau. This projects requires just a handful of supplies and only took me about 30 minutes to make. Enjoy!
Supplies: thin fabric with edges that don't fray, (faux) leather cord (I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby), sewing machine.
Pantry Supplies: scissors, masking tape.
1// Begin by measuring out and cutting the pattern of the top. I measured it around my chest and added an extra 15-20 inches to the width. The length of my top was 16 inches. The extra inches in the width is to create an open back.
2// Next, fold it in half width-wise and mark the middle with a sewing pin. From there, hold it up to your chest and measure out where you would like the straps. With the middle pin as a guide, place symmetrical pins where you would like to attach the straps.
3// I used six pieces of faux leather cord for each strap, making twelve pieces total. Mine were 20 inches long each. To prevent fraying, attach a small piece of masking tape to each end.
4// Once you've cut the leather cord, stitch them in a straight line where you marked the placement for the strap previously with the sewing pin. Make sure the ends are secure and hidden on the inside. I stitched over each piece of leather cord three times for extra security. Be sure to cut off the extra cord where the masking tape is attached.
5// Next, create the shirt form by stitching together the open fabric ends.
6// Lastly, crisscross the straps and stitch them to the back of the shirt. I had 19 inches in-between the back of my straps which created the open back, but I highly suggest pinning and trying it on before stitching it since everyone's size/shoulder structure is different.
