Double Parted Ponytail

Seen double partings on a lot of runways; Gianfranco Ferre, Ann Demeulemeester and recently also at Barbara Langendijk among others. (Also looks fantastic with dark hair) But never have I come across someone on the streets with two partings like this. So I thought I'd give it a try as a variation on my usual middle parting with low ponytail. Loving how easy it is to get this graphic symmetric look.

how to:two hair ties ,comb, bit of gel or hair spray.  Find the center of your hairline and from there make two diagonal partings. Now you've created a triangle of hair on the top of your head, pin this up into a little bun.Comb the rest of the hair downwards into a sleek, low ponytail and secure it with a hair tie. Take out the little bun and comb this top section of hair backwards and secure it with another tie over the existing ponytail.

FLAT IRON WITH BEND

51e51d3b5a5b4

  1. Brush out any tangles.

  2. Apply a leave-in conditioner to help close the cuticle.

  3. Brush it through to make sure it’s applied consistently.

  4. Now you’re going to “wrap brush”. Wrap brushing is just what it sounds like– you’re using the curve of the head to help smooth out the hair. Wrap everything to the left…

  5. Then wrap everything to the right. Wrap brushing back and forth also helps with funky cowlicks. If your hair is curly and more resistant, this is the point where you would use a round brush to smooth out those curls.

  6. It’s very important that you don’t forget to flip upside down when blowdrying before flat ironing. Why? Because you don’t want the hair pasted down to your head! Always looks better to have the smallest amount of lift at the root.

  7. Section and clip off your sections as you go. Sectioning is a must when flat ironing. If you don’t section, you can miss spots and end up with inconsistent texture. (Nobody wants to be that girl with the curl pattern creeping through the back!)

  8. Go through and mist the hair with a heat-protecting spray.

  9. Personally, I like to mist the whole head, brush it through with a soft bristled brush, then go back and flat iron. That gives the heat protecting liquid time to soak in + dry. If you’re the type who likes to spray each section right before you flat iron, please be sure to let the spray dry before running the iron through.

  10. Run the flat iron through behind a soft bristled brush.

  11. Here’s the trick. Right after the hair comes out of the flat iron, you’ll want to drape it over the brush as you see in photo 11. Let it cool for about 10 seconds and set it down. Once the hair cools with a little bend move to the next section.

Fishtail Braid

51ef88b965a21

Fishtail Braid Tutorial

1. Backcomb/tease the crown of your head.  This makes the hair “sticky” for starting the fishtail.

2. Gather a small handful of hair from the back center of the head and separate the hair into two sections.

3. + 4. Take a small strand of hair from the right section, pull it back and cross it over to join the left hair section.

5. + 6. Take a small strand of hair from the left section, pull it back and cross it over to join the right hair section.

7. Repeat these steps all the way down the back of the head.  Continue throughout the “tail”.

8. Secure with hair tie. Fishtails looks beautiful a little disheveled.  To achieve this look gently pull apart/loosen the braid.  It’s ok if it’s uneven or little pieces falls out.  Gives the fishtail a youthful, messy ease.

Fixing your hair does not have to be a chore. Normally, the longer your hair the more you have to work with it to get it to do what you want. Getting that celebrity hairstyle can seem difficult, even if you have all of the tools and potions to pull off a great look. If you want something easy and something that looks great for casual and formal occasions, there is a simple hairstyle that you can achieve in just 1 minute.

HOW TO STYLE A LOW BUN

52262ac8a0434

1. Seperate a few thick strands from the top of your head (where your part naturally ends) and tease them by brushing the hair up toward your head. 2. Pull your hair down, styling it into a low pony tail. 3. Fluff up the teased part of your hair. 4. Now that you have a volumnious low pony tail use a hair tie to keep it in place. 5. Seperate the hair of your pony tail in half, tease the upper half. 6. Use the lower half (the unteased hair) and flip over the top or your teased bun. 7. Wrap hair around the base of your bun and pin it in place. 8. Style any loose strands.

HOW TO CURL YOUR HAIR WITH A FLAT IRON

51f1df92ecb4f

1. Prep your hair with a light mist of product like hairspray before you start to help hold the curl. Grab your flat iron and let's get to it!
2. Grab a section of hair. You'll notice I'm starting with one of my longer layers instead of the front shorter pieces. I prefer to do it this way because if I curl the front pieces, the curl ends up being too high and too spiraly. If you don't have layers you don't need to worry. Also, don't worry about sectioning off your hair and making it perfect, just grab chunks from the bottom and go!
3. Starting in line with your cheek bone, clasp the hair and bring it up behind the flat iron...
4. Bring the hair over the front of the flat iron. Try not to keep such a tight grip.
5. Slowly move the flat iron down the remaining hair while holding it horizontally, spinning it under as you go. Keep a loose grip while doing this so the iron moves freely. When you reach the bottom, flip the iron vertically and pull down to release the hair.
6. You can see the first two finished pieces here. Continue doing this all around your head.
7. With all of the hair done, you can move onto your front pieces. Start lower down and just curl them away from your face slightly.
8.  Separate your hair with your fingers to break up the curls and you're done! That took only about 10 minutes to complete. Finish with hairspray to hold.
Hope you liked this tutorial! If you have thin hair like me, it's a lifesaver when you have little time to mess with your hair. Try it and let me know what you think!

Three twisted buns

diy-waterfall-braid-tutorial

1. This style is so easy, it's laughable. Day-old hair is best (which is true for most hairstyles, since it's easier to work with hair that has a little dirt in it).

2. Divide your hair into three equal parts and quickly spray each section with a little hairspray to help give it hold. Let the hairspray set for a couple seconds, and then lightly comb it out.

3. Take the section on your right side, and twist your hair all the way down to the end. You want to twist counter-clockwise, toward your face. Wrap the right section in on itself, just like you're making a little bun. Let some of the hair stick out, it's ok (you don't want them to look like Princess Leia buns).

4. Pin the right bun in place. I like to use these mini bobby pins, since they're easier to hide and they're coated in rubber so they hold your hair better.

5. Next, twist the middle section clockwise and pin. Then twist the left section clockwise and pin.

6. Spray the three buns with a little more hairspray, and you're done!

WATERFALL BRAID WEDDING HAIRSTYLES

diy-waterfall-braid-tutorial

1. Part hair on it’s natural side.

2. Grab a small piece and divide into 3 sections.

3.French braid for 2-3 inches.  This will secure the “waterfall” and make sure it doesn’t fall in your face.

4. After you’ve French braided for a few inches, drop the top section of your braid.  It’s ok.  Let it fall.

5. Pick up a new section of hair from directly behind where you’ve dropped the top piece. This new piece acts as a new section of your French braid

6. Keep moving around the head.  Remember, every time you grab a section of hair from the top of your head to add to the braid, let is drop and replace it with a new section.

7 +8. When you reach the other side of your head, secure the end of the braid with Bobbi pins.

*This braid can be a little tricky.  But practice makes perfect.

Extra Tips

- You should brush your hair before braiding.  Knots and tangles make it hard for the person braiding your hair.  Might also hurt a little bit!

- Part on your natural side.  Adjust instructions according to your part.

- Day old hair is best.  A little grit is good for braids as they hold-up better. Clean hair is too slippery.

- These tutorials are written for someone to braid your hair, not intended for self-braiders.  Unless you are really clever and talented!
